Fish & chips

389 kcal for the entire recipe.

 

(technically it's only about 375 or something, because you don't use the

entire 1/2 egg and 15 grams of breadcrumbs,

you only use it for dipping the fish in and then toss the rest,

but I counted the kcal for everything)

 

Recipe:

170 grams pre-cooked potato fries     148 kcal

100 gram codfish filet                          69 kcal

15 grams breadcrumbs                       52 kcal

1/2 medium egg                                  32 kcal

2 tbsp tartare sauce                            88 kcal

3 tbsp oil (kcal included in fish & potatoes)

2 tbsp flour (kcal included in fish)

(you only use about 2 tsp flour, but you need 2 tbsp to make sure the fish is properly covered)

 

(to make the potato fries, boil the potatoes WITH the peel.

THEN peel them and cut them into 1 cm fries.

Peeling them while they're cooked is more difficult, but it does make them taste better)

 

Take a small foodbag, put all the potatoes in there,

along with 1 tbsp oil and some salt/pepper/other herbs you want to use on the chips.

Shake it and stir it a bit with your fingers so that every potato has some oil and herbs on them.

Put them all in a bowl and put them in a pre-heated oven on 200°C

(sorry, I don't know how many fahrenheit that is) for about 20-25 minutes.

 

As those are cooking, prepare the fish.

Dip the fish in the flour first, then the egg, and then the breadcrumbs.

Heat up a pan with two tbsp oil (a little more makes it more kcal,

but it also minimizes the chances of burning the crust of the fish,

if you're not confident in your cooking skills).

Bake the fish on medium heat for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until it is golden brown.

(don't worry if a bit of the crust comes loose while you're baking it.

It happens to me all the time. It doesn't affect the taste much).

 

Try to start on the fish when the potatoes are about done

(with another 10 minutes or so on the clock) so that they'll be done at about the same time.

 

Put the fish on the plate, along with the chips, and add two spoonfuls of tartare sauce

(I just use the store-bought kind, but you can look up a recipe online and make

your own for less kcal if you want to).

I put the chips in for exactly 20 minutes, so they're still a bit mushy (more potato than chips).

If you want them to be crispier, just leave them in for 25 minutes or maybe even a

little longer, until you think they're done.

The longer you leave them in, the crispier they'll be

(until they're black and then they're REALLY crispy, but also disgusting).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

My opinion on this:

 

Difficulty:

★ ★ ★

This isn't one of those 'just throw it into the pan and wait' kinda recipes.

You actually have to work for this one, but it's definitely worth it.

I think the fish is most difficult, because if you have the fire on too high,

the crust will burn while the fish is undercooked.

If the fire is too low, the fish will cook

really slowly (but will ultimately taste better imo).

 

Taste:

I like this because you can't really tell that it's low-kcal.

Many of the recipes I try are low-kcal and it shows.

Not that they taste BAD, but they have this definite 'diet stuff' taste to it

(the one my dad is always complaining about).

I like that taste, but every now and then I want to pretend I'm a normal person by eating

something 'fatty', but without the kcal.

This is perfect for that.

 

Portion size:

★ ★ ★

Well, it's a full plate of food, but then again, it's also a lot of kcal.

But then again, it's really tasty, but then again...

I can't really decide if the PORTION is worth the kcal, but I personally think the TASTE is.

As for the portion, it's a proper meal, so it's not like you're having two bites of something and calling it a meal, so the portion size is decent.
